First Year Experience

Welcome Programming

First year scholars participate in a three day welcome program where they arrive to campus prior to the start of classes. This program instills in them that leadership and service are essential to the Guarantee.

  • Welcome Dinner
  • Service Day – We create a morning of service to engage scholars in giving back to their new community.
  • Welcome Workshops- We provide our scholars with first year preparation workshops that prepare them to manage their time and financial aid and expose them to the abundance of resources available to them at UNCG.
  • Team Quest Low Ropes- Scholars have an intensive morning of team building at UNCG’s Team Ques
t experiential learning campus. This experience bonds students together as a cohort and creates a foundation for a support system of peers.
  • Peer & Alumni Mentor Matching- We introduce our scholars to two sources of support during the welcome program; their UNCG Guarantee Cohort Captain and their Community Mentor. Cohort Captains are upperclassmen in the Guarantee Program who serve as peer support and role modeling to the incoming Guarantee cohort as they transition from high school to college.  Community Mentors are adults in the Greensboro community with a connection to the university, many are alumni and current staff that serve as the student’s connection to the Greensboro community and beyond.

Leadership Retreats

In addition, first year scholars attend a fall leadership retreat in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and a spring leadership retreat in Greensboro, North Carolina, where they focus on developing themselves as leaders from the very beginning of their college career. Guarantee scholars are leaders on campus.  Once they receive the scholarship, they know to whom much is given, much is expected. The welcome program and the leadership retreat prepare them to rise above their potential.

Instructor Feedback Forms

During their first semester, Freshmen scholars are required to complete instructor feedback forms for each of their courses. This not only allows the Guarantee Staff insight on where the student stands in their classes, but it also allows the students to get practice speaking with their professors in regards to their academic success.

Academic Excellence Workshops

First year scholars are required to attend four workshops (two per semester) from our workshop serious to ensure academic success.
